Why Preteens Matter by Russ Zacek

Preteens (ages 10-13) are a hidden treasure in the church, often overlooked in the gap between children and youth ministries. As churches prioritize kids’ programs (infancy to 5th grade) and youth groups (6th-12th grades), preteens can feel disconnected. Elementary ministries feel “babyish” to 4th and 5th graders, while youth groups intimidate 6th and 7th graders with older teens’ content and dynamics. This gap risks losing preteens’ engagement as they seek belonging elsewhere—in friend groups or secular activities.

What Makes Preteens Unique

As a kids’ pastor for 15 years, I’ve witnessed thousands of preteens encounter God profoundly at camps and retreats. Their innocence and curiosity fuel a deep desire for His presence. At 10-13, they’re mature enough to serve but young enough to have unscheduled lives, making them ideal for ministry involvement. They learn quickly, unburdened by bad habits, and thrive when trusted with responsibility. Serving sparks joy as they discover their gifts, fostering camaraderie and purpose.

Preteens are raw material for discipleship. Mentored well, they become spiritual leaders who pray, study Scripture, and avoid sin’s traps before facing them. Unlike older teens or adults, their hearts are pliable, ready to be shaped for lifelong faith.

How to Start a Preteen Ministry

Every church can bridge this gap with an intentional preteen ministry. Here’s how to begin:

  1. Pray for Guidance: Ask God to reveal the plan, resources, and mentors needed. Seek godly adults who are passionate about mentoring preteens.

  2. Start Small: Launch with a weekly small group (1 leader per 3-5 students) using a Bible-centered discipleship curriculum. Focus on mentorship and service opportunities in the church and community.

  3. Provide Structure: Secure a consistent meeting space, time, and opportunities for preteens to serve. As momentum builds, more kids and adults will join.

  4. Seek Support: Connect with Leaders In Training, with 23 years of experience helping churches build preteen ministries. Email russ@leadersintraining.com for a free Zoom consultation.

The Time Is Now

Preteens are not just the future—they’re a present force for revival. By investing in their spiritual growth, churches can disciple a generation of passionate, purpose-driven believers. Don’t let this demographic drift. Start a preteen ministry today and unleash their potential to change the world for Christ.
